Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the first ever (and if Google is to be believed, the world’s only) amiibo of the year awards! Now in their 3rd year on the market the amiibo craze has shown no signs of slowing down with 34 figures, 90 cards and 1 cereal box released over the last 365 days for us to Collect, Customize and Compete with. Nintendo’s level of dedication to amiibo is not only impressive, but also noteworthy since amiibo are essentially the only toys to life figures still on the market, and so we decided to honor these little, plastic friends in 10 categories that celebrate all things amiibo. Which ones took home the honors? Let’s find out!

Also, make sure to tune in next week as we reveal our Game of the Year awards winners.

Best Dressed

Our first award goes to the princess of the Mushroom Kingdom and her fabulous wedding dress designed by Wendy O’s Dress Co. in anticipation of the wedding of the century. With a silky, layered veil accenting her ‘something blue’ earrings and pendant this was an obvious choice for the world’s most popular princess. The outfit is completed with a pearl-white gown that seems to radiate thanks to inset accents that sparkle in the moonlight. Truly there was no better dressed amiibo in 2017.

Runner Up: Bayonetta (Player 2)

Best Functionality

Taking home the Best Functionality award are Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia‘s heroes, Alm and Celica. These two heroes not only allow players to save their stats and upload them in new save files but each also unlocks a brand new dungeon that will not only test your tactical mettle but reward you with extremely useful items and gear. And who said amiibo are only good for unlocking new costumes?

Runner Up: Pikmin

Most Likely to Never Get a Restock

30th Anniversary Mario - Classic Color amiibo Box Art

Sometimes the best things in life are only around for a short time. Such is the case with the Player 2 variant of Cloud’s amiibo. An EB Games / Gamestop exclusive this amiibo received very little in terms of stock on its release date and since we’ve seen nothing from the boy from Midgar and, let’s face it. Probably won’t ever again. But what puts this amiibo over the top is the fact that the character is technically on loan from Square Enix, making the prospect of a full restock even bleaker in the long run.

Runner Up: Corrin (Player 2)

Best amiibo With More Than Two Legs

Runner Up: Guardian

Lottie Memorial Award

This award is a very special one here to us at the Link-Cable Award’s Committee as it commemorates one of the bravest amiibo the world has ever seen. It takes a lot of courage to sit patiently and silent on store shelves, watching other amiibo get snatched up as soon as they are released while you struggle to see through the layer of dust accumulating on your packaging. This award goes to that amiibo that never gave up, even when things looked grim and proudly defended that spot on Best Buy’s shelves for months on end. My friend, we salute you… but I think I’ll get another Poochy instead.

Runner Up: Inkling Boy 3

Most Delicious

It took some time, but after personally taste testing all of the amiibo released this year, I can confidently say that the ‘Delicious’ amiibo definitely takes the cake. Why? Well it was the first amiibo to not make my mouth bleed after testing and my I definitely feel better now that I don’t have so much plastic in my stomach. Note: This award is also shared in part with Neilson’s 2% milk.

Runner Up: Mario Sports Superstar Cards

Scalper’s Choice

Link amiibo Box Art

Scalpers and amiibo go together like butter and popcorn. Every single time new amiibo are released you can bet that someone will write a script to automatically add 500 to their Amazon cart and then sell them back to your for 4X times the price. And this year, no amiibo made scalpers happier than Link from The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, an amiibo that had all the traits a scalper looks for. Great design, store exclusive, low initial run – he has it all!. I’m sure you made someone very happy Link (and thousands of us just as mad).

Runner Up: Link (Twilight Princess)

Best Link

Link amiibo Box Art

2017 will be remembered as the year of ‘Link’ in amiibo circles as we received not one, not two but five versions of the Hero of Time to add to our amiibo collections. And while each of these surely was a candidate for the top prize, we have to give the nod to Archer Link from The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, thanks to his incredible design, useful in-game functionality and the fact that he personally saved my Hylian bass more times than I can count as I played through BOTW.

Runner Up: Link (The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask)

Best Design

The design quality of amiibo is something that has consistently increased with time, but its to imagine them getting any better than this. The Metroid amiibo is not just a figurine but a ‘in action’ scene that just screams ‘high quality’ with different textured surfaces (including a super squishy Metroid brain) this is an amiibo that is not only fun to use (its functionality is pretty great) but just fun to pose and help show off your collection with.

Runner Up: Mipha

Amiibo of the Year

 amiibo Box Art

You may have noticed that our choice for ‘amiibo of the year’ did not win any of the above categories. Well that’s because, instead of being great at one thing in particular, this amiibo excelled at them all. Bowser’s wedding amiibo has it all. It’s sharply dressed, has great functionality, a fantastic (and a little hilarious) design, doesn’t taste all that bad and is one of the highest quality amiibo Nintendo has ever made. Three years in, the amount of people obsessively collecting all of the amiibo may have dropped off significantly but this is one that absolutely needs to be in your collection and is our choice for the 2017 amiibo of the year.

Runner Up: Metroid

That does it for our picks, but now we want to hear yours! What was your favorite amiibo released in 2017? Let us know in the comment section below!
