E3 2017 has come and gone and we now have dozens of new games on our radar that we can’t wait to get to in 2017, 18 and beyond. From shooters, RPGs, platformers, puzzle games and everything in between this E3 delivered in almost every aspect which is why it was so hard to boil this list down to just ten (at some point we had 30 games in the running) but boil we did and we’re happy to unveil our picks for the best games of E3 2017. Now hopefully we won’t have to wait too long to play these.
10 – Destiny 2
The original Destiny was a whole lota fun but that doesn’t mean it was perfect. Far from it actually. The story was shallow, the gameplay could get repetitive and the player base dropped off significantly a few months in. Destiny 2 looks like to right all of these wrongs by providing a deeper narrative, varied missions and regular content updates to keep fans happy. So is Destiny 2 destined for greatness? We certainly hope so.
9 – South Park: The Fractured but Whole
One of only two games to make this list and our Best Games of E3 2016 list, South Park: The Fractured but Whole is a game that has been on our radar for a long time now so the news that it was coming in September was met with cheers and a couple of ‘FINALLY’s’ at the Link-Cable office. Hopefully the game is as funny as its pedigree but also fixes some of the nagging gameplay issues we had with its predecessor.
8 – Assassin’s Creed: Origins
After taking a couple of years off we were a bit concerned in what shape Assassin’s Creed would return in, especially after the back to back messes that were Unity and Syndicate. Well from what we’ve seen of the Origins we are confident that the franchise is back and possibly better than ever. The new setting of Ancient Egypt offers many new gameplay possibilities and story threads that aren’t seen in many (if any) contemporary titles and the gameplay looks refined to the point of excellence. We can’t wait to take a step back in time with Assassin’s Creed: Origins.
7 – XCOM 2: War of the Chosen
Announced at the very beginning of the PC Gaming Show, this expansion for XCOM 2 has all the elements that make a good PC strategy expansion. Revamped gameplay mechanics, a new story and fixes to some nagging issues are all promised to be a part of the War of the Chosen which helps make one of the best PC games in recent memory even better.
6 – Metro: Exodus
One of the most visually stunning games we got to see at E3 2017, Metro: Exodus is an absolute showcase for both the Xbox One X and PlayStation 4 Pro with its post-apocalyptic Russian serving as the perfect setting to do battle with ghouls and the undead. But it’s not just the graphics that have us impressed but the redefined gameplay that appears to take the formerly very linear series into (literal) new directions with an emphasis on the importance of choice.
5 – Detroit: Become Human
David Cage has always been known as the creator of very moving games that blur the line between a visual novel and a fully interactive video game and his latest title, Detroit: Become Human looks to take that a step further with a powerful story about the recognition of artificial life as equal to natural life. While this may seem like the topic of sci-fi novelists it is definitely something that will become very real over the next few decades and a conversation that needs to be had.
4 – Monster Hunter World
One of the few news games announced during Sony’s E3 press conference Monster Hunter World is a welcome return to consoles for a franchise that has made its home on handhelds over the last few years. Featuring stunning graphics, new gameplay refinements and (best of all) fearsome new monsters to hunt, this is a game we will be popping into our consoles the moment it releases sometime in 2018.
3 – Metroid: Samus Returns
FINALLY! We haven’t gotten a 2D Metroid game since Metroid: Zero Mission on the Game Boy Advance and some of us (not me!) were starting to give up hope that we would ever see the franchise again after Federation Force bombed. Well thankfully Nintendo heard our prayers and is delivering a full remake of the Samus’ 2nd mission in the form of Metoid: Samus Returns for the Nintendo 3DS. And the best part? The game will be out in just a few months!
2 – Super Mario Odyssey
When Super Mario Odyssey was first revealed I’ll admit I was skeptical. Not because the game looked bad but I needed to know what the ‘hook’ would be that would make the game stand out. Well at E3 2017 Nintendo showed off just would make Mario’s latest so super and wow were we impressed. The ability to possess enemies and objects, granting Mario their abilities is absolutely fantastic and fits perfectly into Mario’s repertoire. October 27th can’t come soon enough.
1 – God of War (2018)
Last year’s runner-up in our best of E3 list takes home the crown in 2017. God of War (2018) is an impressive game in every single account. Visually, the gameplay, the story, the sound design, everything about this game screams quality and we are already counting down the days to “early 2018” when we finally get to play it.
